The state bird of Ohio is Cardinalis cardinalis -- the Northern cardinal.

Cardinals are songbirds. They are monogamous and non-migratory. A cardinal's wingspan is approximately 10-12 inches, and it weighs about an ounce and a half. The average cardinal's lifespan is 15 years. Its diet consists mainly of seeds, grains, and fruits, though it will occasionally eat insects and caterpillars.

There are an estimated 100 million cardinals worldwide. Males of the species are fiercely defensive, and will frequently attack others who stray too far into their territory. If a male cardinal sees its reflection in a glass surface, it will sometimes spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder.
